Sarah Kernachan was born in Londonderry, Ireland. Recently, her father's name and place of birth was found through the sharing of a Family Bible that Sarah had sent to her father as a gift. Her father, John Kernachan was born in Carrigans, Donegal, Ireland. He sent Sarah and her sister, Mariah Caroline, to America, but he remarried and remained in Ireland.He had another daughter, Eliza Jane, who inherited the Bible and passed it down through her family branch.
In Sarah's obituary it was stated that she came to America in 1822 when she was 12 years of age. She married Thomas Armstrong on Sept. 9th, 1839 in Boston, MA. They had eleven children; Florinda, (married Charles W. Green); Sarah Jane, (married David W. Mitchell): John T.; Abram T.; Anna Myrtle.(She died at age 12); Mary Ellen,(married Gabriel Davis, James A. Greene); David Belford, (married Lovina Speck); Frances Louise, (married Edward Elliot Bolsinger); Thomas William, Martha Ann, (married George Babcock) and Bessie M., (married Wm. Cutbirth, Charles Howey).
Thomas died Oct. 31, 1869 leaving Sarah a widow with eight surviving children. She remarried to a Edward W. Russell on Aug. 17th, 1876.
She was a a member of the M. E. church since she was 16 years old until her death. At the time of her death there remained eight of the family, her second husband, thirteen grandchildren and one great- grandchild which she had held in her arms.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. D. McLeish, in the M.E. church. She was laid to rest in the Oquawka cemetery.
