James Louis Martin, 83, of Lead, SD, died Saturday, August 15, 2009, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center, at Fort Meade, SD. James was born to Thomas and Agnes (Heller) Martin on August 01, 1926, in Reliance, SD.
He then moved with his family to Lead at a young age. Jimmy attended elementary school in Lead, before lying about his age to join the Marines and serving in World War II at Okinawa and Iwo Jima. He spent his 16th birthday in a foxhole on Okinawa. After the war, he returned to Lead. He worked on the construction of Pactola Reservoir and at Bald Mountain Mine. He also worked at Martin's Conoco near Lead. James loved working his mining claims in the Rochford area, hunting, and fishing. He was a long-time member of the Deadwood VFW and the NRA.
His parents, four brothers, and two sisters preceded him in death. He is survived by two brothers, Philip of Lead, and Raymond of Marblehead, MA; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services for James will be Thursday, August 20, 2009, at the Lead-Deadwood Funeral Chapel in Lead. Inurnment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. A memorial has been established to the Veterans Relief Fund.
