Willie B. Pope was born December 26, 1945, in Huntsville, Alabama. He was the oldest of three children born to Callie Cosey and Willie Pope. He died at Huntsville Hospital on Tuesday, August 11, 2009. He was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Pope
GRANT, O GOD, THAT I MAY SHARE MY NEIGHBOR'S NEED, HIS WANT, HIS CARE. LET ME BE COURAGEOUS, STRONG, AND LIFT ANOTHER'S HEART TO SING. LET ME ALWAYS THINK OF OTHERS; TREATING ALL MANKIND AS BROTHERS. EVERYDAY THAT I MAY LIVE —- LET ME NOT TAKE, O LORD, BUT GIVE!
The life described above is truly exemplary of the life that Willie B Pope tried to live; for the one characteristic that will stand out most vividly in the minds of those who knew and loved him is service to others. He believed firmly that the best way to serve his God was by serving his fellowman.
He served his family with loyalty, dedication and a deep sensitivity and responsiveness to their needs.
He lived close to "The Master," as he always fondly referred to God, and he depended on Him as his daily counselor and guide.
He joined the First Missionary Baptist Church and served faithfully in the Sunday School, Usher Board, Keenage Ministry, and the church's Storehouse Ministry until his death.
He received his education in he city schools of Huntsville, Alabama. After graduation, he worked on many jobs and retired as the Assistant Fire Chief at Redstone Arsenal Fire Department; was employed with the Federal Government for thirty-one years; two of these years were spent in the United States Army, including one year in Vietnam where he obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Willie B. was an outstanding, dynamic community leader and demonstrated these qualities in his affiliations with the Fraternal Club, the Athletic Boosters Club, Councill High School Restoration Committee, the NAACP, the Masonic Order, where he served as Junior Warden for many years; the Order of Eastern Star, where he served as Associate Patron; a 32nd Degree Mason, and member of the Alhazar Shrine Temple #195. He also worked with Rural Senior Services. He took a special interest in the elders of the community and devoted many hours to seeing that they were taken care of—in fact, this was a special calling for him as he drove that van used to carry them on special shopping, sight seeing, and educational trips.
He also served as counselor for Boy Scout Troop #102, was a Board Member of the AARP Chapter #1023 (TRIAD S.A.L.T. Council) and participated in the Rolling Hills Community Watch.
Willie B. Pope leaves to mourn his passing: a loving and devoted wife of 39 years, Patricia; an understanding son, Darryl (Kyra); a loving daughter, LaVonda (Darius Craig); "Pa-Pa's beautiful grandchildren, Darryl, Kydarra, Darius, Jr., DaVon, and Danae´; step-mother, Edrine Pope; five brothers, Ernest Pope, Harold Pope, Eddie Pope, Alex Cosey, and George Greene (Leola); one sister, Eva Pope; aunt, Idata Gurley (Detroit, MI); special nephew, Marlin Wilder (Trina); special cousin, Sandra Cosey; devoted mother-in-law and father-in-law, Leonard and Gussie Jackson; sister-in-law, Barbara (Charles Blackburn); one special mom, Mrs. Mozel Roper "Mama Mo"; special friend, Mr. Everett Lanier "Ruff", and numerous other nieces, nephews, godchildren, and friends.
