Theophil Biner was the son of Alois Biner, a member of the Swiss Parliament, and Maria Perrin. He was born in Randa, just outside of Zermatt. He married Juliana Truffer and they emigrated to Montana. Theophil became a US citizen on July 10, 1894 in Jefferson County, Montana. He was a carpenter by trade and some of the homes he built still stand in the town of Boulder, Montana. Theophil was also a musician and he was fluent in four languages.

He and Juliana had nine children: Albert, Daniel, William, Gustave, George, Mary Cecelia, Emile (who died as an infant) and Julia. Some of his sons became noted brewmasters. The Biner family lived at various times in Montana, Washington, British Columbia, and California.
