He appears as "E. A." Sprague on the Hungtington Twp. Civil War Monument. The inscription on his cemetery monument reads Edwin Sprague and that he drowned in the Gauley River West Virginia, Oct. 9, 1861. There was no Edwin Sprague in the Union Army but there was an Edmond A. Sprague who enlisted in Company F, 47th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, June 15 1861 for a 3-year term of service and was mustered in, July 29, 1861 as a private. Promoted to Sergeant he drowned in the Gauley River, at Carnifax Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia) Oct. 9, 1861. The Official Roster of Ohio Soldiers, Vol. IV, p. 780 states that he was buried at Staunton, VA, however there is no record of his burial there at Staunton National Cemetery. An incomplete Find A Grave Memorial #23637931 shows him buried at Staunton National but does not list a section or grave nor is there a headstone photo. His middle initial may have stood for Albert as the 1850 U.S. Census for Huntington Twp. listed him as Albert, 9 years old, living with his parents and three sisters. He may have gone by his middle name. He does not appear in the 1860 U.S. Census.
