The son of John & Jane Adams, he married Susannah Goudy February 8, 1859, in Perry County, Pennsylvania, and fathered William (b. 08/09/60), Elsworth (b. 11/28/61), Ira (b. 05/31/64), John (b. 03/08/67), Charles (b. 03/01/69), Samuel (b. 06/??/71), and Levi & Maria (b. 06/02/76). In 1860, he was a mason living in Spring Township, Perry County, and stood 5' 7" tall with black hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Carlisle September 5, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 10 as a private with Co. F, 209th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 31, 1865.

In 1877, he moved to Carlisle.

The death certificate indicates John was widowed at time of death, and his occupation was listed as stone mason. Father is shown as John Adams and mother's maiden name is listed as Susan Moore.
