Private HENRY HARRISON KIDDER, at thirty-four years of age enrolled at Fort Jones, California, 11 Sept. 1861, to serve in the 2nd CALIFORNIA CAVALRY, Company H, as a private. Henry was mustered in 25 Sept. 1861.

This regiment was organized at San Francisco, CA, with ten companies and each company was assigned to different Fort's in the Western Frontier. Company "H" served as follows; ordered to Fort Churchill, Nevada Territory, 22 Oct. 1861 with duty there until July 1862; marched to Utah to protect Overland mail route, July to Nov. 1862; engagement on Bear River, Utah Territory, 29 Jan. 1863; skirmish Spanish Fork Canon, Utah Territory, 11 Apr. 1863.

During the month of Apr. 1863, the following was written regarding the company's movement: 425 miles in the saddle for the month, they had three engagements with the Indians and won each battle and were assigned to Nevada and Utah Territory's. They made a treaty with WINNEMUCCA, Chief of Piute Tribe, on the Trickee River, near Pyramid Butte, Nevada Territory.

They continued to serve in the following; during the month of June 1863 the Company captured 49 SHOSHONE Indians without loss of a single man from the company; duty in District of Utah until Dec. 1864. They were assigned to guard, Camp Douglas, Utah Territory during Sept. and Oct. 1864. Henry Kidder was mustered out at Camp Douglas, 4 Oct. 1864 and re-enlisted as Veteran Volunteer, 17 Oct. 1864.

In the winter, the regiment was at Fort Bridger, Wyoming Territory from Nov. 1864 to Apr. 1865. In Aug. 1865, company records gave the following account: assigned to guard Platte River in Dakota Territory, and at the Big Horn Valley engaged the Village of Arapahos, on Tongue River, killed 63 Indians and captured 600 horses and mules, and burned the lodges and supplies. The regiment was reassigned to Government Reservation, Rush Valley, Utah Territory form Nov. 1865 to Apr. 1866.
Henry Kidder was discharge with company and left for California with his regiment, 12 July 1866.

Henry Kidder was KILLED IN ACTION, shortly after leaving the Utah Territory by an Indians attack near Salt Lake City, Utah, then called the Great Salt Lake. Henry Kidder died unmarried.
