The son of John & Mary (Church) Caldwell, he was bapized on Feb. 29, 1756 and died at age 82 yr. He married (1) Margaret Collyer, daughter of Capt. Hezekiah & Jennett (Evans) Collyer, and (2) Rachel Bishop, widow of William ____ and daughter of Jonah & Anne (Plimpton) Bishop. John Caldwell was one of the first subscribers of the Hartford Bank in 1792 and served as director & president. According to the obituary of his daughter, Elizabeth (Caldwell) Rogers, he was a prominent merchant of Hartford who lost ships and property through the French spoliations.

7. Samuel d. March 17, 1782 ae 3, buried in the Center Church Graveyard.
8. Infant d. June 22, 1793, buried in the Center Church Graveyard
9. Elizabeth, widow of Dr. E. P. Rogers and younget daughter of Major John; she died in Montclair, N.J. in her 90th year. She left six children (listed in (Families of Early Hartford, Connecticut, p. 157)
