Lennis Sheppard Ramey was the daughter of Charles E. and Daisey L. (Openburger) Ramey; an only sibling included a brother, Sanford. Not much is known of Lennis early life, although she was believed to have been raised in the Mt. Gilead area of Clarke Co., Virginia--but later moved to live in-and-around the areas of Berryville and Martinsburg, West Virginia.

About the time that Lennis turned 16, she began dating a young man named William M. "Willie" Stickles (b: 17 Mar 1896 in Virginia; d: 15 Oct 1918, Clarke Co., Virginia) who was living with his family in Bluemont, Virgina. Soon they fell in love and then finding herself with child, she and Willie soon thereafter married (date, place, state-unknown). On 9 Dec 1917, Lennis gave birth to a baby girl which she and Willie named 'Frances Virginia Stickles'. Sadly, in less than a year after their baby was born, Willie died (date, cause and place of death; avilability of death certificate are all unknown)--leaving young Lennis a widow at 17 years of age. Willie was subsequenly buried in the Stickles family plot/'section' of Ebenezer Church, which is located near the village of Bloomfield, in Loudoun Co., Virginia--just off Rt. 719. (NOTE: Ebenezer Cemetery is also known as Ebenezer Church and Graveyard.)

Evidently soon after Willie's death, Lennis quickly moved back into her folks house, where she lived for any number of years. She and baby Frances also spent some time living off-and-on with her former mother-in-law, Mary Anna Lee (Pier) Stickles. Proof of this is in the 1920 Census, which states that "E. Charles Ramey and L. Daisy Ramey and son S. Edward were living in Mt. Gilead, Virginia; Frances is listed living there as "granchild'. And not living far away was Annie L. Stickles, herself also a widow at that time. Mary Annie Lee Pier's first husband was Simon M. Stickles (b: 16 Feb 1873; d: 5 Dec 1917), and they were married 2 Jan 1896 in Berryville, Clarke County, Virginia. Their marriage produced five sons, all but one of whom are buried with Simon and Mary Anna Lee in the Ebenezer Cemetery.

Lennis married a second time (date and place of wedding-unknown) Perry Washington Pier, and this marriage produced a son who they named Robert L. "Bobby" Pier. After Bobby became an adult, family lore has it that he later in life eventually changed his last name's spelling to PIERE--"so as to make it sound more French." NOTE: Perry was one of the son's of Perry Pier, Sr. - who also was fathered Mary Anna Lee (Pier) Stickles. This marriage eventually ended in divorce, and with Lennis needing to continue to work-Frances lived occasionally with various relatives in northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. areas.

Lennis married a third time (date and place unknown) a Maurice J. Clarke, and this marriage evidently produced no children. Maurice also died early in his life, at age 52 (1 Jan 1952), and he was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Suitland, Maryland.

Lennis apparently continued to work off and on, and lived the rest of her life as a 'widow' in a couple of homes on Trenton Steet and Tenth Steets, in S.E. Washington, D.C. Eventually, when her health began failing her, she moved to live with her son Bobby Piere's family in Thousand Oaks, California, until her death on 22 Jun 1991.

From newspaper obituary:
LENNIS S. CLARKE, age 90. On Saturday, June 22, 1991 in Thousand Oaks, California-formerly of Arlington, Virginia-mother of Robert Piere, and sister of Sanford Ramey. Also survived by eigtht grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. (NOTE: there was no mention of her daughter Frances Virginia (Stickles) McCormack in the obituary--who had four children of her own, but who had also died only a few years before her own mother in May 1988). Friends were able to call at Murphy Funeral Home in Arlington, at 4510 Wilson Blvd, Virginia- from 7 to 9 p.m. Services were held on Firday, June 28, 1991 at 11 a.m.-with interment at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Suitland, MD. Memorial contributions were requested to be made to Mary Healift of the Sick, 2929 Thersea Dr., Newbury Park, California 91320.
