Emily Guillaume Nelson lived in Evergreen most of her life, but her achievements stretched well beyond the mountain community.

Ms. Nelson was listed in the Who's Who in American High School Students and had other national awards under her belt by the time she went to college in Kansas in 1991.
She was in her second year of college when she died April 5 at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood of injuries suffered in a car accident on Vail Pass March 24.

A memorial service was April 10 at the Episcopal Church of Transfiguration in Evergreen.
She was born Jan. 27, 1973, in Denver.

She was a 1991 graduate of Evergreen High School, where she active in the Distributive Education Council of America marketing program. She competed in DECA at the national level in her junior and senior years and received Top Ten in the Nation awards her senior year.
She also was a member of the high school's pompon squad, which placed among the top 10 in the nation in 1991.

From Evergreen High she went to the University of Kansas in Lawrence, where she was a sophomore majoring in business communications.

She was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority, the Rock Chalk Revue, the Crimson Crew and was involved in the Natural Ties program in Lawrence.

Ms. Nelson was presented at the 1991 Summer Debutante Ball was a 1991 Central City Flower Girl and was a debutante at the 1991 Denver Symphony Ball.

She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Mimi and Russell Hughes; her father and stepmother, Gordon and Nancy Nelson; a sister, Lisa Nelson of Boulder; a brother, Grant Nelson; a stepbrother, Scott Hughes; a stepsister, Lori Hughes; and her grandfathers, Walter Wilkinson and Gerhardt Nelson.
