Bradford K. Durfee, aged seventy eight, Secretary of the Mutual Home and Savings association, died Wednesday morning at Glenn Arbor,Mich. where he went last week for a stay for the benefit of his health. Death was due to diseases incident to his advanced age. He had been ailing for the past year. It was thought that a northern trip would be beneficial to him, but the journey was probably more than he could stand. Mr.Durfee, with his wife and daughter,Miss Edith, left Decatur last Friday for Glenn Arbor. They went from here to Chicago,leaving Chicago on Saturday and arriving at Glen Arbor on Sunday. Cards received by relatives from Chicago indicated that Mr. Durfee had stood the trip in good shape. The telegram announcing his death which came to his nephew James H.Durfee stated that the body would arrive in Decatur Thursday.The funeral services will be held at the family residence, 338 W.Decatur, on Friday afternoon at 5 oclock.
The problems of finance, real estate,loans, insurance and other intricate business propositions always found ready solution with Bradford K.Durfee. He is one of the oldest if not the oldest, real estate and insurance man in the city. Mr.Durfee was born in Marshall,Mich, March 25,1838. He is descendent in the seventh generation of Thomas Durfee. The progenitor of the family in the new world. Mr.Durfee moved to Decatur with his parents in 1857. At that time they made their home in the old Durfee farm in Hickory Point twsp. Bradford became a country school teacher. In 1863 Bradford K. Durfee gave up the teaching and came to town to enter the office of his uncle,E.b.Durfee. In 1865 he was admitted to the firm of Durfee,Warren and company and subsequent changes in the firm lead to the change in name to Warren and Durfee, in which John K.Warren and Bradford K.Durfee were associated
Mr.Durfee has been prominent in political circles both in state and city. He secured the enactment of the law for establishment of building and loan association and was superintendent of the State Insurance Department from 1893 to 1897. When the Mutual Home and Savings Association was not in the best of shape, Mr.Durfee took hold of it. He has redeemed it and put it on a sound firm basis. He has been connected with this association as its Secretary and in spite of his advanced age could be found at his office every morning until about a year ago.
Mr.Durfee was a charter member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge in Decatur and was a member of Beaumanoir Commandry Knights Templar. He was a Republican until 1872 and them became a Democrat. He was a delegate to the convention which nominated Cleveland in 1892. He was a member of St.Johns Episcopal church.
Mr.Durfee was married at Toledo,Ohio,in 1868 to Miss Lucy W.Hamilton of that city. Their children were Lucille who became the wife of Lewis E. Eymand and died in 1907,and Edith who is making her home in Decatur. Mr.Durfee is survived by 3 grandchildren who live in Seattle Wash. and a sister Jennie Durfee of Upland Cal.

In 1878 he was a democratic candidate to the 31 General Assembly.
He was a Civil war vet and joined his brother,B.R.Durfee in the Ohio Regiment.
Mr.Durfee was a member of the city council in 1884 for a term of 2 years.
He had an appointment of Commissioner to the penitentiary of Joliet.
