In about 1853, the BARBER family moved to Refugio & Aransas Counties, finally settling near Rockport, Texas.
Land Records show: $300.00 dollars paid for by John Albert Barber for Farm Lot 124 of twenty acres more or less and Post Oak lot No. 8 of twenty acres more or less on the survey known as the School Tract lying being and situated on the West side of the Mission River on the Town of Refugio.
1858:was County Commissioner for Saint Mary's precinct
Records also show John Barber was on the Board of the State National Bank of Tivoli, Texas
The Barber's owned large holdings of land in Bee & Refugio County.
John Albert Barber served as a Private in Daniel C. Doughty's Spy Company, Company B, 29th Brigade.
After the Civil War,the railroad bypassed St. Mary's, John Albert Barber moved to outside Rockport to the Barber Ranch. This was located on a stretch between what is now Highway 188 and 1069, and going back on 1069 towards Rockport, Texas.
John Albert Barber died at the home of James M. Doughty on December 19, 1869
