Joseph Nicholson

Joseph James Nicholson, who was a historical interpreter at Colonial Williamsburg from 1960 until near the end of 1972, died Aug. 9 at Walter Reed Memorial Hospital in Gloucester following a long illness. He was 71 and a resident of Gloucester County.

A local historian, Mr. Nicholson served on the restoration committee of Abingdon Episcopal Church in White Marsh until the time of his death. He was a lifelong member of the church. He belonged to the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities and was a charter member of the Gloucester Historical Society. He was considered an authority of colonial churches in the Tidewater area.

He is survived by two brothers, George D. Nicholson of Hayes and G. Llewellyn Nicholson of Gloucester.

A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. this Wednesday, Aug. 12, at Abingdon Episcopal Church by the Rev. Dennis J. J. Schmidt, rector. Burial with Masonic rites will be in the church cemetery.

The family has asked that tokens of sympathy be expressed by way of contributions to the building fund of Abingdon Episcopal Church.
