He Lived in Alcona County 52 of His 81 years February 1, 1923 ~ With
the death of Lyman H. Dunn, which occurred at his home near Harrisville on Thursday,
January 25, Alcona County loses one of the very few remaining veterans of the civil
war. Mr. Dunn was 81 years, 2 months and 3 days old. He was born Nov. 22, 1841, in
Raymond, Potter County, Pa., and was barely 20 years of age when on June 1st, 1861,
he enlisted as a private in the U. S. Service. He enlistment period was for three months
and he was a member of Capt. Berdwell's Company A, 6th Pa. B. E. F. Infantry Volunteers commanded by Col. Whiting. This regiment was assigned to Key's division,
Army of the Potomac. And he was honorably discharged August 27. 1861. He
reenlisted and during his term of service participated in the following battles: Bull Run,
Ball's Bluff, Hanover Court House, Seven Days Retreat, Second Bull Run, Harper's
Ferry, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Beverly Ford, Winchester (1863)
Gettysburg, Manassas Gap, Rappahannoch Station, Wilderness, Winchester (1864)
and Fair Oaks. At the battle of Gettysberg he was wounded by a gun shot in his right hip and was in Condelson's Camp hospital, West Va. He was captured by Confederates at
Poolsville, Va., Nov 1, 1862, and confined in Libby Prison, but was released March 1st,
1863. He was finally discharged on Sept. 29, 1866. A few years following his
release from the service, Mr. Dunn came to Harrisville where on June 8, 1871, he
was united in marriage with Elizabeth Nestle, who with one daughter, Mrs. Thos. T.
Allen of Alpena, survives. There are also seven grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren living.
In his early life here, Mr. Dunn followed the woods and mill work, being several years
in charge of the lath mill at the old Colwell saw mill. He was an enthusiastic
Odd Fellow and when health permitted was seldom absent from the meetings of the local
lodge. He lived 47 years on the farm where he died.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the home, being in charge of Rev.
G. W. Hawley. The interment took place in the family lot at Springport where the burial
service was performed by the Odd Fellows and a firing squad from Armstrong Post
American Legion participated.
