Major League Baseball Player. Nicknamed "Cookie", he was a third baseman making his debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 17, 1934. For ten seasons, he played with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1934-36), Brooklyn Dodgers (1937-41, 1946-47) and missed four full seasons due to military service during World War II. He also was a four time All-Star (1938-41). He finished his playing career with a record of 487 runs scored, 945 hits, 40 home runs, 486 runs batted in and a .269 batting average. In 1961, he became the Minnesota Twins first manager, plus also was a coach for the New York Mets (1962-63) and San Francisco Giants (1964-67). He died in his sleep at age 77.
