Fred worked as a farmer, then a railroad brakeman, then sold cream separators, and finally went back to farming. He married Maggie Mary Champion on 28 March 1886 at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Champion, in West Plains Township, Meade County, Kansas. Over the next 27 years, they had 11 children, two of whom died in infancy.
