Lewis and his wife Melvina both descended from families of Pre-Revolutionary settlers who had ventured into the mountains north of colonial Massachusetts. They were married in 1861 in Jamaica, Vermont, and lived there about a decade. They had a daughter, Fidelia, and a son, Lyman. Their second son, Leslie, was born in Wardsboro where they farmed from 1870 until 1895. They spent the rest of their lives in Newfane.
