Generally referred to in public notices as Mrs. MM Bills, records show variances in M’s first name. On her birth record her first name is Malvina with Mandana as a middle name. Mandana is the only given name on her cemetery headstone. In 1894, her son, Lyman, and his Irish-born wife intending to follow the Irish tradition of giving their second daughter the name of her paternal grandmother, chose Melvina. (See photo of 1915 news clipping from The Vermont Phoenix.)

BioMM was born and raised in Somerset, VT. The nearby valley town of Jamaica was her home during the first decade of her married life. About 1870 she and Lewis moved their family to a farm in Wardsboro. By the time their son Lyman was in his twenties, he had become an excellent farmer, adept and skilled in many areas. Wanting a paying job to help with family finances and to invest in a farm of his own, he went to New York to work. In 1895 MM and Lewis, with their daughter Fidelia and son Leslie, moved farther down the valley to the town of Newfane. Lewis died in 1897. Lyman returned from New York with a wife and 3 children, finally establishing a family farm on Newfane Hill. MM lived until 1920 in close proximity to her children and grandchildren.
