Funeral services for James Herman Rather,79, a Caney area resident, will be held Friday May 4, at 2:00p.m. at Atoka Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial will be in Caney Cemetery in Caney, under the direction of Atoka Funeral Home.

He died Tuesday, May 1st 2001 at Durant, Okla. Born June 12, 1921 in Comanche, Okla., he was the son of Sam Colvin Rather and Laura Bell Barton-Rather.

Mr. Rather was a retired machinist and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans and a member of the Masonic Lodge in Atoka. Mr. Rather was also a member of the Caney Baptist Church.

He was married to Edna Lucille Dawson on January 22, 1965 in Las Vegas, Nevada. She preceded him in death on May 4, 2000. Also preceding him in death were his first wife, Bernice Vonnie Riddle-Rather.

Three brothers, William Ozra Rather,Hobart"Fox" Rather,and Sam Roland Rather, one sister Clora Belle Butler.

Survivors:include his son James E. Rather and wife Deborah of Waxahahie, Texas, two stepsons, James Clifford Adams and wife,Patricia of Bentley, Okla. Arthur Donald Adams and wife, Brenda of Talihina, Okla. Two step-daughters, Virginia Verni and husband Tony of San Jose, Ca. and Geri Tillman and husband Wilbur of Galena, Mo.

Numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Ziona Malone of Chickasha, Okla. and Laura Ozette "Sis" Sutton and husband Ted of Loco, along with several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Pallbearers include, James Adams, Tim Adams, Joseph Adams, Ross Kelly, and James Carter.
