Opal Burkett, 103, of Palestine, died at 6:40 a.m. Saturday, December 01, 2007, at her home. She was born September 1, 1904 in Carlyle, IN, the daughter of Al Mathias and Mary Schwint. She was a homemaker and had been a waitree in a local restaurant. she was a member of the Palestine First Christian Church.

She married Maurice Alumbaugh in 1921 and he preceded her in death in 1949. She then married John Burkett on September 19, 1954 and he also preceded her in death on April 8, 1975. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her 3 sons, Maurice, Gerald, and Harold Alumbaugh; 3 brothers; and 3 sisters.

She is survived by her 2 stepsons, Keith Burkett, Durham, NC and Orlin Burkett, Owen Co, IN; her daughter-in-law, Wilma Alumbaugh, Palestine; 13 grandchildren; many great grand, great-great grand, and great-great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, December 5th at 10:00 a.m. at the Goodwine funeral Home in Palestine with Rev. Paul Murray Alumbaugh in charge of services. Burial is in the Robinson New Cemetery, Robinson, IL. visitation is Tuesday, December 4th from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Lincolnland Hospice with envelopes at the funeral home.
