Doyle C. "Hoss" Newsom Jr., 72, of Plains passed away Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, in University Medical Center in Lubbock.

He was born June 27, 1928, in Freestone County. He married Odie LaVerne Lusk April 12, 1953, in Plains. He moved to Wilson in the early 1940s. He saw active duty in Korea and moved to Plains in 1953.

He was a member of First Christian Church and served as Sunday school superintendent.

He owned and operated Newsom Gin in Plains.

He retired from the gin to farm and to operate the award-winning Newsom Vineyards.

He was past president of the Lions Club and the Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Plains City Council and a Grandmaster of Odd Fellows. He also served the American Veterans Legion and was a board director of Plains Cotton Growers as well as past president of Plains Booster Club. At the time of his death, he was director of the Texas Wine and Grape Growers Association.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Neal Newsom III of Plains; a daughter, Denise Johnson of Levelland; a brother, J.W. "Dub" Newsom of Lubbock; and four grandchildren.
