Enlisted October 2,1861, at Mount Pleasant, Iowa, in Company E, First Iowa Cavalry; on November 1, 1861, was transferred for promotion as sergeant to Company B, Eighteenth United States Infantry; served a little over two years, at Shiloh, Mill Springs, Perryville, etc.; discharged at Louisville, Ky., on account of disability. Settled at Sheldon in 1883.
