During the Battle Of The Bulge, the 101st found themselves surrounded in December 1944 by German forces. Acting commander, Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe, when confronted with a written request from German General Luttwitz for the surrender of Bastogne, his reply was one word: "NUTS!"
