Believed to have been a member of the 463rd Parachute Artillery Battalion, 101st Airborne Division at Bastogne, Belgium. During the Battle Of The Bulge, the 101st found themselves surrounded in December 1944 by German forces. Acting commander, Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe, when confronted with a written request from German General Luttwitz for the surrender of Bastogne, his reply was one word: "NUTS!"
Many men of the 101st denied that they needed Patton's help to break out of the seige.
