Obituary, Journal Inquirer (Manchester, CT), 1 Dec 2005:

Bernice Elizabeth (Fians) Abbe, 86, of Hamilton Court, Enfield, beloved wife of Albert H. Abbe and a longtime librarian at the Enfield Public Library, died Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2005, at Heritage Hall in Agawam.

Born in Great Barrington, Mass., a daughter of the late James and Edna (Richards) Fians, Bernice had been a resident of the Hazardville section of the Enfield community for most of her life. She had been employed with the Enfield Public Library for over 40 years, beginning at the former School Street Branch in Hazardville for several years and later at the Enfield Central Library. Bernice earned her BS in Library Science from UMASS and returned to school at the age of 71 to earn her Master's Degree in Library Science from the University of Rhode Island. She retired from the Enfield Central Library in 1998 as a Reference Librarian, a position she had held for several years. Bernice was a past member of the Connecticut Library Association and the American Library Association and also, on occasion, wrote for the Springfield Newspapers. Prior to her employment at the library, she was employed as a stenographer with the Phoenix Fire Insurance Co. in Hartford, and later in the Billing Dept. of Hallmark Cards. Bernice was an active communicant of St. Bernard's Church, a member of the Rosary Guild of the parish, and was instrumental in establishing the library at St. Bernard's School. She was also a member of the Third Order of Carmelites and a member of the Claddagh Club of Enfield.

In addition to Albert, her dedicated husband of 55 years, she is survived by several nieces and nephews, Charles and Phyllis Larson of Agawam, Donna and Bruce Farnsworth of Enfield, Gary Abbe of Rockville, and Gail Montano, Bruce Abbe and Lynn Abbe, all of Florida. She was predeceased by her sister, Edna P. Larson.

Bernice's family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff at Heritage Hall for the kind and compassionate care they extended to her.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. from the Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Bernard's Church. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery.

Bernice's family will receive relatives and friends at the Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Donations in Bernice's memory may be made to the Baystate VNA & Hospice, 50 Maple St., P.O. Box 9058, Springfield, MA 01102-9058 or to St. Bernard's Church, 426 Hazard Ave., Enfield, CT 06082.
