Born in 1833 in Stewart County, Georgia, Evans was a lawyer, legislator, and judge in his pre-Civil War career. During the War for Southern Independence, Evans was elected Colonel of the 31st Georgia Infantry and was wounded five times. In 1864 he was promoted to Brigadier General, and given command of General John B. Gordon's division, which he led until the surrender at Appomattox Court House. After the war Evans was a minister in the Methodist Church for 26 years, and was the editor of the twelve volume "Confederate Military History." Served as Commander-in-Chief of the United Confederate Veterans (UCV) until his death.
