Mrs. Effie Ward, 66 year-old Hubbell telephone operator was instantly killed late Sunday night in a two-car collision on South 3 Hiway (sic) on the North edge of Hubbell.

Mrs. Ward was riding in a car driven by her son, John Ward, 38, of Fremont. The other vehicle was driven by Owen Deterding, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Deterding of Deshler. In the Deterding car were three other teen-agers, Beverly Heitkotter, Chester and Jake Kenley and Jeannene Petrick, Hebron.

Riding with Mr. Ward in addition to his mother were his wife and two small children. Both vehicles were badly damaged but no injuries were reported to any of the other occupants of either car.

Deputy Sheriff Claude Young said the Ward car was hit almost broadside by the Deterding vehicle and traveled 170 feet, bouncing off a tree and scraping the side of a house, before coming to a stop.

Mrs. Ward's body was 100 feet from the spot of the crash.

South 3 Hiway (sic) makes an L turn at the North edge of the Hubbell city limits and Deputy Young said War was approaching from the West, left 40 feet of skid marks before the crash, the deputy said.

Mrs. Ward is survived by two daughters, Carol Witt and Mrs. Twila Thompson of Fremont and two sons, Don of Fairbury and John, Fremont. She had one sister and four brothers.

Funeral services will be held at Zion American Lutheran Church in Hubbell at 2 o'clock Wednesday, with burial in Ida Cemetery, South of Hubbell.
