Kelly Castleberry, a Kanawha County political figure for many years, died Tuesday afternoon at his South Charleston home. He was 76.

In 1960, campaigning alongside presidential candidate John F. Kennedy, Castleberry won the first of three terms in the House of Delegates. He later served a six-year term on the County Commission and was appointed county clerk.

Twice South Charleston Democrats nominated him for mayor, but he lost each time to Republican Richie Robb.

Known for his easygoing style in local government, Castleberry once denied that county government machines had been used to mail his campaign materials - then admitted that he had "fibbed."
