James D. Schmink James Donald Schmink was born March 19, 1922 to James Frederick and Stella Marie Bradymeyer Schmink. A lifelong resident of Indianapolis, Mr. Schmink grew up in Brightwood and graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in 1939. He began courses at Butler University, interrupting his studies to enlist in the U.S. Navy after Pearl Harbor was attacked. He attended Midshipmen School at Columbia University and served as a gunnery officer on the U.S.S. LSM66 in the South Pacific during World War ll. On leave before shipping out for his tour, he met a beautiful young girl and the love of his life, Iola Sue Rosenbaum, at the Indiana Roof Ballroom. Three weeks later they married and would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in November. After his time in the Navy, Mr. Schmink continued studying for his Pharmacy degree at Butler University while working at Eli Lilly. After graduation, he opened Professional Pharmacy on East 38th Street with his brother-in-law. In the mid 1960's, Mr. Schmink left the Pharmacy and began a career in sales, first with medical equipment, then with Success Motivation, where he was honored as Rookie of the Year in 1969. In the 1970's, he began selling real estate and started his own company, Camelot Realtors, which specialized in farm sales. Toward the end of his working career, he returned to work as a pharmacist at both the VA Hospital and Kroger. Mr. Schmink served as a deacon at Third Christian Church, where he and his family were longtime members. He was also a member of the Millersville Masonic Lodge. Don especially loved spending time at his farm in southern Indiana, where he enjoyed the beauty of the land and adjacent Hoosier National Forest. Mr. Schmink is survived by his wife of 64 years, Iola Sue Schmink, daughters Patricia Parsons (Bill) and Merilee Klootwyk (Tom), grandson James C. Parsons (Carrie), granddaughters Kelly Kwiatek (Jarrett), Lauren, Katie and Lily Klootwyk, and great-granddaughter, Abigail Parsons. He is also survived by a large and loving extended family. His son, Steven James Schmink, passed away earlier this year. Mr. Schmink's passing will leave an ache in the hearts of everyone who loved him. He was the rock of his family, a true patriarch whose faith, values, love of family and ability to find and focus on the good in life and people will be traits his children and grandchildren will forever aspire to emulate. A private family memorial service will be held on September 2, 2009. Arrangements are being handled by Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center - Washington Park East. Memorial contributions may be made to Riley Hospital for Children or to the Indianapolis Marion County Public Library Foundation, PO Box 6134, Indianapolis, IN 46206. www.flannerbuchanan.com
