Bill was the natural born son of Annie Hennessy and Charles D. Bennett, both natives of Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was given the name James Henry Hennessy at birth. He was born and baptized at the Providence Home for Orphans and Unfortunate Women in Detroit, Michigan (Old Providence Hospital) and was adopted at one month old by John T. and Bridget E. (Hayes) Wallace. He had one step-brother, Thomas F. Wallace, four half-siblings from his Hennessy side, and two half siblings from his Bennett side. On June 30, 1914, he married Loretta Clementine Kennedy at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Detroit. The Wallaces had six children: Marie Loretta Wallace, William "Billy" Wallace, John E. Wallace, Geraldine Elizabeth Wallace Carpenter; James Robert Wallace; and Elizabeth Janet "Betty" Wallace. Bill, also known as Will in his younger years, was a paving engineer for the City of Detroit for many years.
