Retired Business Leader Succumbs To Lingering Illness

Thomas Jefferson Anderson, 74, long prominent in business, church and livestock affairs in Manti, died at his home Tuesday morning after a lingering illness. He was a brother of Pres. L. R. Anderson of the Manti Temple.

Mr. Anderson was born April 4, 1874, at Fountain Green, a son of Lewis and Mary Ann Crowther Anderson. He early moved to Manti with his parents and married Eliza Westenskow in the Manti temple, Jan. 19, 1892. She died Nov. 16, 1899 and Mr. Anderson later married Etta Tennant in the Manti temple on March 30, 1904.

Active in church work, he had served as clerk of the Manti ward for 19 years and, during that same time, was president of the Young Men's Mutual Improvement Association for a number of years. He also served on the Manti City council for two terms.

He was a partner in the Manti Livestock Co. for many years and was one of the prominent livestock men in the county. He was manager of the Anderson-Dyreng Furniture and Hardware Co. (now the Simmons store) for 46 years and retired a few years ago due to ill health.

Surviving are his widow, two daughters, Maud and Mona Rae Anderson; his brother, L. R. Anderson, and two sisters, Mrs. Mable Simmons and Mrs. Jane Westenskow, all of Manti.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 4:00 p.m. in the Manti Center ward chapel. Friends may call at the home, 65 East Union street, Friday until time of the services. Burial in the Manti City Cemetery will be under direction of the Buchanan mortuary.
