Paul Eugene Atkins Jr., born Oct. 15, 1933, passed from this world to his Heavenly home Sept. 3, 2009. He was preceded in death by his father & mother, Paul & Mae Atkins; and his sister, Peggy Sue Atkins Giles. Paul was a Navy veteran and also loved to speak of his fond memories of Pratt Junior High, where he was football captain, and his days of playing baseball as a catcher at East Bank High. Most of all, he was honored by his pastor and congregation, as he was a deacon for the First Baptist Church of Standard on Paint Creek for many years. Paul & his wife, Margaret, were married 54 years. Also surviving are his daughters, Jeanette Marie Wood & husband, John David Wood, and Trinity Alyse Maynard; two granddaughters, Melissa Marie Wood Hull and Jenny Lynn Wood Liddle & husband, "Skip"; one sister, Judy Ann Atkins Hodge of St. Albans; brother in law, Robert L. Giles of Havelock, NC; three great-grandchildren, Alex and Brionna Hull of Powellton and Aiden Liddle of Belle; several nieces and nephews; and a host of brothers and sisters in Christ; as well as many friends; and a very special couple, Ferlin Ray Sr. and Connie Maynard of Marmet. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, September 5, at the First Baptist Church of Standard with Ernest L. White, pastor of First Baptist Church of Standard, and Anthony Pratt, pastor of Youth and Family of First Baptist Church of Ravenswood, Gary Tincher, associate pastor of First Baptist Church of Standard, and Scott Tincher, pastor of Youth and Visitation at First Baptist of Standard officiating. Burial will follow in Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens, Glasgow. Friends may call from 6 until 9 p.m. Friday at the church. O'Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Standard.
