Mary L. Nieman, 76, of Shell Rock, Iowa passed away on Friday, September 19, 2003 at the Shell Rock Health Care Center in Shell Rock, Iowa. Mary was born September 29, 1926, daughter of Alexander Noble and Rosa Gertrude (Moore) Thompson in Shell Rock, Iowa.

She graduated from Shell Rock High School in 1944 then attended Iowa State University for one year.

On March 15, 1947 she married George Hoodjer at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They had four children. George passed away on August 9, 1975.

She married Darrell Nieman on December 18, 1977, in Clarksville, Iowa.

Mary was a devoted homemaker, mother and farm wife. She enjoyed music, and was church organist for St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville and Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock, Iowa. Mary also enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking fishing, playing cards, quilting and sewing. She was a member of Faith Luthern Church, Shell Rock Legion Auxiliary, Post #393 and an avid member of the "grandmas" card club.

Survivors are her husband, Darrell of Shell Rock; daughter, Jan Phillis of Fredricksburg, IA; sons: Galen Hoodjer (Patsy) of Greene, IA and Ken Hoodjer (Judy) of Clarksville, IA; eight grandchildren: Corey Hoodjer (Lori), Mandy Hoodjer, Kelly Hoodjer, Amy Hoodjer, Lindsey Hoodjer, Steve Hoodjer, Matt Hoodjer and Nick Phillis (Michelle); three step grandchildren: Shane Phillis (Tamara), Jason Phillis (Emelda) and C. Joseph Phillis (Allison); one step great grandson, David Phillis; three sisters-in-law: Lucille Thompson, Helen Thompson and Ann Hirsch.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, George; son, Keith in infancy; four brothers: Arthur, Fritz, Robert and Harley Thompson; four sisters: Nelle Thompson, Dora Harms, Alice Roelfs and Lucille Hollen.

Her funeral was September 22 at Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock with Pastor Steven D. McGinley officiating. Burial was in Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville. Casketbearers were Amy Hoodjer, Lindsey Hoodjer, Steve Hoodjer, Corey Hoodjer, Mandy Hoodjer, Kelly Hoodjer, Matt Hoodjer and Nick Phillis. Memorials were to American Diabetes Association.
