RUTH MANGELSDORF
Dr. Ruth Brune Mangelsdorf, 87, Bemidji, died Tuesday at the Beltrami Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Bemidji with the Rev. Thomas Payne officiating. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the Bemidji Funeral Chapel Sunday from 4 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Dr. Philip Sauer, Dr. Robert Decker Carl Thompson, Dr. Harold Hagg, Dr. William Britton and Irvin F. Keeler. Organist for the services will be Thelma Bender; soloist will be Felice Dickey.
Ruth Esther Brune was born Sept. 12, 1893 near Lawrence, Kan. She attended elementary and high school in Kansas, received a BA degree from Baker University in Kansas and MA degree from Columbia University in 1924, and a PhD at Boulder, Colo., in 1947. She taught in high schools in Kansas before coming to Bemidji State University as an English teacher in 1924. She continued there until her retirement in 1962 and belonged to many professional organizations, contributing to their publications. She founded the college newspaper, The Northern Student, and organized the Nautilus Club, now Alpha Phi Sigma. She was a member of the AAUW, League of Women Voters, Women's Garden Club, Delta Kappa Gamma and the United Methodist Church. She was married to Fred W. Mangelsdorf in 1956.
Her honors included scholarships from Baker University, the University of California, the University of Colorado, and a fellowship at the University of Colorado. Her biography has appeared in the World Who's Who in American Education.
She is survived by two stepsons Eugene Mangelsdorf and Arthur Mangelsdorf both of Kansas City, Kan.; three stepdaughters, Mildred(Mrs Hugh) Bell, Atchison, Kan., Constance(Mrs Edward)Menze, St. Paul, and Frances(Mrs Clarence)Seeber, Kansas City, Mo.; a sister Mae McCoin of Kansas; nine nieces and nephews; and Mabel E. Parker, a longtime friend with whom she made her home.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1977 and by two sisters, and three brothers.
