OBITUARY

The Greenville News (SC) - Wednesday, July 4, 1984

J. Y. Godfrey, 74, of 9 First Avenue, Poe, a retired textile supervisor, died Tuesday, July 3rd at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Greenville County, he was the son of the late Wylie and Tuckey Moore Godfrey. He had lived most of his life in Greenville where before his retirement he was employed with Burlington Industries, Poe Plant as Cloth Room Overseer.

Mr. Godfrey was a member of Poe United Methodist Church where he was Treasurer, Lay Leader, Board Member and Past Sunday School Superintendent. He was also a Master Mason and a member of the Hejaz Shrine Temple. He was a member and past Vice President of the Piedmont Senior Golf Association; a member of the Senior Action Folf League and a member of the U.S. Golf Association.

Surviving are his wife, Elaine Johnson Godfrey of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Barbara G. Bailey of Anderson and Mrs. Mary Lou G. Arceneaux of Greenville; a son, J. Randall Godfrey of Mauldin; a grandson reared in the home, Christ Godfrey; one brother, Otto Godfrey of Greenville; four other grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Chapel of the Thomas McAfee Funeral Home by Rev. Floyd Chandler, Rev. Harvey Peurifoy and Rev. Thomas Dyer. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery.

The family is at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary Lou Arceneaux, 115 Farmington Road, Chestnut Hills, but will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 PM Wednesday at the Thomas McAfee Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Poe United Methodist Church.
