He was a retired custodian for Maple Park Elementary School, Huntingburg Indiana and was a member of the contenders of Faith Holiness Church in Otwell. He was preceded in death by: his wife, Geneva (Denton) Bayer, who died on February 9, 2002; one daughter, Brenda Lubbehusen; two brothers, Floyd and Irvin Bayer; and one sister, Pauline Lane. He is survived by: Two daughters, Rachel York-Meyers and Sarah James; One son Phillip Bayer; Four brothers, Donald, Ronald, Chester and Levinus Bayer; Four sisters, Tilley Sturgeon, Kathleen Crawford, Jeannie Underhill, and Ardella Pulley; grandchildren and great grandchildren.
