The seventh son of Alexander Goodby Middleton and Mary Polly Townsend was born at the Old Home Place (built by his father in 1819) in what was then McIntosh County Georgia on 4 July 1837.

He enlisted in the Confederate Army in September 1861 as a Private in Captain Lamar's Company of the 1st Georgia Cavalry Battalion, at Darien, Georgia.

The record is incomplete; he does not appear on any muster rolls for the Lamar Rangers, Company H of the 5th Georgia Cavalry.

After the war Charles stayed home with his mother and helped run the family farm until her death, at which point he inherited the entire estate. According to Beth Engel, only then did he marry - after the death of his mother. However an examination of the date of Polly's death compared to the birthdate of Charles and Marian's firstborn reveals that Mrs. Engel was probably incorrect.

His four sons were Boy (Charles Lawson Middleton Jr.), Dutch (David L. Middleton), Niger (Alexander Goodby Middleton), and Boss (William Nelson Middleton).
