Walter was the 2nd child born to Hans and Hannah Aune. He attended school in Baldwin, WI, and was a graduate of Stout State College in Menomonie, WI.
Walter taught high school in Knoxville, TN, and later worked for Arrowhead Electric in Duluth, MN. After moving to Grand Rapids, he was active in several business ventures, and taught in the vocational division of Itasca Community College until his retirement in 1973. He was very active in scouting and served on the board of Zion Lutheran Church.
He was married to Mildred Haukom in Knoxville, TN in 1936. They had a son, Howard, and daughter, Kathryn, who died as an infant. Mildred passed in 1956.
