Agard H. Bailey Jr., 96, of Des Plaines, Ill., formerly of DeKalb, died on Friday, Jan. 6, 2006, at Alden Des Plaines Rehab and Health Care Center in Des Plaines. Born Aug. 23, 1909, in Fort Leavenworth, Kan., he was the son of Agard H. and Margaret (Woodruf) Bailey Sr. Agard was married to his first wife, Mabel E. Driscoll, in 1951 in Evanston; she preceded him in death in 1984. Agard then married Alma Mae Henson on March 2, 1985, in DeKalb. Agard worked for the Scatteredgood Friends School in West Branch, Iowa; he was also a Spanish teacher at Eureka High School, and then he was a associate librarian for Eureka College for 15 years. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in DeKalb and the Sons of Norway, and he enjoyed calligraphy, woodworking, traveling and reading. He is survived by a brother, Philip, of California; seven step-children, LaVerna (Richard) Jackson of Elk Grove Village, Mary (special friend, Richard Shaw) Henson of Des Plaines, Eve (Robert) Horton of Fort Atkinson, Wis., Roger (Marsha) Henson of Fort Worth, Texas, Darrel (Barbara) Henson of DeKalb, Brian (Mary Kay) Henson of Bloomington and Bryce (Andrea) Henson of North Liberty, Iowa; 16 step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandsons; two step-great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Mabel and Alma Mae; and two brothers, Richard and Bradish. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, at Trinity Lutheran Church in DeKalb, with Pastor Todd Peterson officiating. Burial will be at South Grove Cemetery in Kirkland. Visitation will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Trinity Lutheran Church in DeKalb.
