Margaret (Maggie) was the daughter of Reuben Whitney Reed and Sara Elizabeth Emerson. Reuben said to be the last surviving nephew of Ely Whitney, the inventor of the cotton gin.

Siblings; Jessie Edna, Rueben Whitney, Everett, Ruth Charlotte, Edith Cordelia, John William and Gladys Olive.
She married Lorenzo Albert Melton about 1905 in Nebraska and had two children: Helen Elizabeth and Carl Melton. She also raised her sister, Edith Cordelia (William) Hanslip, daughter Mary after Edith died in Nov 1926.
