Capt. U.S. Navy. Thatcher was killed near the mouth of the Red River in Louisiana commanding the U.S. gunboat Gazelle.

Brigadier General Daniel Ullmann informed his superiors in a letter of the 27th that Thatcher, who was "on shore with 2 men at Raccourci, near Williamsport, was murdered by guerrillas and horribly mutilated." Lieutenant-Commander J.J. Cornwell reported that he seemed to have been murdered simply to take his boots and gun.
