1st Earl of Northampton, Roman Catholic aristocrat and courtier. His public career under Elizabeth I was marked by a charge of intrigue with Mary Queen of Scots and imprisonment (1583-85) for suspected heresy and treason. He was one of the judges at the trials of Raleigh and Lord Cobham in 1603, of Guy Fawkes in 1605, and of Garnet in 1606.
