Mary Martha Bagwell was born 1813 in St. Mary's (Auburn), Wake County, NC, the youngest of 7 known surviving children (3 boys/4 girls) born to farmers, Nathan B. Bagwell and his wife, Sarah "Polly" Mainor.

She was the paternal grandchild of Daniel Bagwell (ca. 1720-1801) and his wife, Elizabeth Johnson, who were born in Dublin, Ireland and came to Brunswick County, VA in the late 1750s, later moving to Wake County in the late 1770's. No information was found on her maternal family tree, although the family name may have been Mainord or Maynard.

Polly was 21 years old on February 24, 1834 when she married 22-year old Joseph Broughton, a young farmer in St. Mary's, Wake County.

The couple farmed in the St. Mary's (Auburn) area of Wake County and were parents to 7 known children (4 boys/3 girls): Gaston H. (CSA, 1838-1907), Minerva (1840-1919), Louisa (1842-1912), Salina (1844-1900), Needham Bryant (1848-1914), Zachariah Thurman (c. 1850), and Joseph Melville (1852-1917).

Polly was widowed suddenly in 1853, when her husband of 19 years died at about age 39. James J. Ferrell was appointed guardian of the minor children, and the court ordered the sale of his 250-acre farm, presumably to pay debts. His then 40-year old widow moved to Raleigh Township where she supported her family as a seamstress.

Mary "Polly" Bagwell Broughton died in Raleigh in January 1892 at about age 79. It is not known why she was not buried with her husband at Mount Moriah, but she is near her son, Needham Bryan Broughton, in Oakwood Cemetery.

Three of her children are buried in Old City Cemetery in Raleigh -- Lt. Gaston Broughton (CSA), Salina Broughton Smith, and Louisa Broughton Smith. Three other children are buried on Oakwood Cemetery, Raleigh -- Needham Bryan Broughton,Zachariah Thurman Broughton and Joseph Melville Broughton. Her daughter, Minerva, married Philip S. Smith of Virginia in 1858 and had 1 daughter (Martha/Mattie). She was last known to be living in Swift Creek, Wake Co. in 1880.

Polly's grandson, Joseph Melville Broughton, Jr. (1888-1949) became U.S. Senator and Governor of North Carolina from 1941-1945.
