Herb Schimmelpfennig, 69, of Bismarck died Thursday, February 24, 1994 at a Bismarck hospital. He was born on April 2, 1924, at Burlington, North Dakota, the son of Herman and Lydia (Lade) Schimmelpfennig.

He graduated from Minot High School and Minot State Teachers College. He then received a Master's Degree in accounting from the University of North Dakota. He later did post-graduate work at Montana State University, the University of Omaha, North Dakota State University and the University of Hawaii. Herbert served in the US Air Force during World War II as a navigator on a B-52 bomber. He married Mildred Dwight, August 3, 1946 at Burlington.

He began his teaching career in 1949 at Sherwood, where he served as principal. He headed the business administration department at Mohall for five years before moving to Bismarck in 1957. He began at Bismarck Junior College as a business administration instructor. Herbert held several positions at the college, including department chairman, registrar, business manager, director of auxiliary services, supervisor of buildings and grounds, personnel director, assistant to the president, and executive vice president. He was also the first executive director of the Bismarck Junior College Development Foundation and was the coordinator of the Bismarck State College National Alumni Association.

Herbert retired from the college in 1987. One of his special interests during his years with the college was beautifying the campus. He was responsible for the trees planted in the early days of the college and organized Arbor Day activities to promote the donation of trees by faculty and staff.

He was active in many organizations and activities. He served as a trustee for the Bismarck Elks Lodge and had been a member of the Bismarck Lions Club since 1984. He was a director of the Lions Club for six years before being elected as district governor.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred; two daughters, Susan Percival, Portland, OR and Kathy Weinstein, Chicago, IL; two sons, Herbert, Grand Forks, ND and Jerry, Fargo, ND; one sister, Esther Carlson, Snohomish, WA; two brothers, Ernie, rural Minot, ND and Bennie, Ruthville, ND and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Laura, and and one brother, Lawrence.
