Sheriff's Office mourns loss of deputy

BY ROSEMARY SMITH, Navasota Examiner editor

The Grimes County Sheriff's Office was saddened by the unexpected passing of Corporal Norman Lofland, who died of a heart attack at his residence on Sunday, Sept. 6. The 67-year-old Richards resident was discovered sitting in his EZ chair by his wife Jackie.

Lofland served Grimes County as a law enforcement officer for the past 30 years. Lofland was a quiet and humble man that was a friend to many and was always ready to help out the public that he served. He was a father figure to many and a wise advisor to all,” said Sheriff Don Sowell.

According to the sheriff, Corp. Lofland worked with Texas Cattle Rangers to help solve cattle and horse thefts. He also handled nuisance abatement and animal astray calls.

Lofland previously served as a local constable for Precinct 1.

"He was a jack-of-all trades and a real nice gentleman. He was a very good friend to everybody," said Sheriff Sowell.
