In 1900 Tom and Clara lived in Republic Twp, Greene, MO, near her uncle Charles Pickering and grandparents Samuel and Margaret. In 1910 the family, including son Clyde, were in the town of Buffalo, Harper, OK, where Tom was a printer at the newspaper office. At the time of his WWI draft card dated 12 Sep 1918, Thomas was in Mountain Grove working as an auto mechanic for Leach Brothers. He was of medium height and build with brown eyes and dark hair. In 1920 living in Mountain Grove, Wright, MO, with son Clyde, Tom was a mechanic at a garage. In 1930 Tom and Clara were on E. Monroe St. in Springfield, where Tom was a mechanic for the Frigidaire agency.

Obituary: "Thomas F. Payne, 82, of 1637 East 8th, died at 9:15 p.m. in Connelly Nursing Home after an illness of 10 days. Mr. Payne was a retired refrigerator repairman and was a member of the Methodist Church. Survivors include a half-brother, Charles Anderson, Fairfield, Calif., and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Klingner Chapel with the Rev. Fred Woodall officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Cemetery near Bois D'Arc." [Spfd News-Leader Tue 17 Dec 1963 p 21]
