Edwin was a twin, his brother was Evelyn Pierrepont Sperry. Born the youngest sons of Anson Sperry and Lucy Jane Stevens, in Marengo IL they attended the schools of their native village until fifteen years of age and then entered the Northwestern University at Evanston, IL - Class of 1880.
Edwin spent many years working as a mining and metallurgical engineer in CO and many western states.
He married Emma Bradley in 1887, and their only child, Frances, was born in 1897 in Denver, CO.

In 1911, he took a staff position as Professor of Metallurgy at Pei-Yang University, Tientsin, China where he taught almost 24 years. The Sperry's lived out the rest of their lives on the University Compound. Edwin and Emma were cremated in China.
