Felix Grundy "Duke" Carter was the son of Elizabeth Miriam Ashley and William Carroll "Blackie" Carter. He was named after his grandfather who was also Felix Grundy Carter.

Felix left home around 1926 (about age 13) and headed west. According to Army records, his last school was in Clendenin, Kanawha, WV. Before he left home, it appears he was an assistant to a cook in the oil fields and helped feed laborers.

At one point on his trip west, he worked for a while at a brothel. He said the ladies there were real nice to him.

By 1936 he was in the Thompson River Civilian Conservation Corps Camp in Thompson Falls, Sanders County, Montana where he trained as a cook. He later trained as a cook in the Army Air Corps during WWII. After being discharged from the Army as a Sergeant in 1946, he returned to Thompson Falls and opened his own bar which he operated until 1981.

His first wife was Agnes Paulson; they divorced. Second marriage was to Edna Tucker Triplett; they divorced. Third marriage was to Marjorie Snyder Pitts, who died in an auto accident. Fourth marriage was to Edna Tucker Triplett Carter Page.

Felix was survived by his wife, Edna, sons William and Michael Carter, and stepson, Gary Triplett.
