ABELL, Stities Elliot Lost the battle to cancer on Saturday, September 5, 2009, amongst his family in his home in Quartz Hill. Stites was born in Norfolk, Virginia in 1933, to Raymond Abell, a captain in the Navy and Harriett Stites, a wife and homemaker. Stites graduated from Wildwood High School in New Jersey and then attended Temple University of Philadelphia. He joined the Air Force in 1953, where he flew in missions during the Korean War. Upon an honorable discharge in 1955, he began to attend the University of Houston, Texas. It was during this
time that he began his career as an electrical engineer. First at local radio stations, then oil companies, and finally aircraft manufacturers. In 1960, he met and married the love of his life, Suzann McQuiston. The two moved to Playa del Rey, California where Stites landed a job at Hughes Aircraft. A year later he was hired on at Lockheed Aircraft as a Service Rep and sent to Europe where he and Suzann would spend the next 13 years. During this time Stites and Suzann had two daughters, Suzy and Stacy. In 1972, they returned to the United States and in 1976, moved to Lancaster, California. In 1991, he retired from Lockheed, but not before traveling to almost every continent and circumnavigating the globe. Stites was a long time member of Mensa, a collector of art, music, pets, and a fan of all things Dilbert. He is survived by his wife Suzann; his two daughters Suzy and Stacy; two son-in-laws Jim and Tom; four grandsons and three granddaughters. Visitation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m., with Chapel Services starting at 10 a.m., Saturday, September 12, 2009, both at Halley-Olsen-Murphy, Lancaster. Interment following at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, Ventura, Calif.
