Peyton Anderson Barnett, age 79, died Friday, Aug. 7, 1998 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. Mr. Barnett was born in Wytheville July 2, 1919 to the late D. Lee Barnett & Ethel Anderson Barnett. He was raised in St. John's Episcopal Church in Wytheville and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marion. He was a graduate of the Fishburne Military Academy and the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. In 1947, Mr. Barnett & his wife, Nancy came to Marion to take over the funeral home which was started in 1946 by his father. Mr. Barnett lived the remainder of his life in Marion and served three consecutive terms on the Marion Town Council. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II. He was a member of the American Legion and former member of the Kiwanis Club. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Johnny Sanders. Survivors include his wife, Nancy W. Barnett, Marion; two daughters, Becky & her husband, Glenn Glass, Knoxville, TN, and Betsy Rouse, Dallas, TX; one brother, D.L. Barnett, Wytheville; three grandsons, Lee B. Sanders & wife, Tyra, Dallas, TX, Glenn (Chip) Glass, Chicago, IL, and the Rev. Michael Anderson Glass & wife, Charlotte, Atlanta, GA; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Aug. 10, at 11 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Michael Glass and the Rev. Jim Pollack officiating. Interment followed in the West End Cemetery in Wytheville. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Johnny Sanders Memorial Band Fund, c/o Marion Senior High School, Marion, VA 24354.
