Eugene G. Whitney, 75, of Townsend Harbor Rd., died Tuesday, Sept. 8, in the Apple Valley Center in Ayer.

He was born in Charlestown, on July 16, 1924, a son of the late, Clarence and Alice (Redmon) Whitney.

Mr. Whitney was a WWII veteran serving as a Corporal with the Eighth Army Air Corps 3502nd Base unit. He was stationed in England from 1944 to 1945 and earned EAME Ribbon with six bronze service stars. Following the war he became active in the Boy Scouts of America. He led Troop 2 in Somerville for ten years and served as a Commissioner on the Boston Boy Scout Council during the 1950's.

In 1963 he moved his family to Lunenburg, where he had maintained a summer cottage since 1951. For over 30 years he owned and operated the Whitney Battery Company. He became known for his warm smile, jolly demeanor, and habit of waving to all he passed whether or not he knew them.

He leaves his wife of 52 years, M. Eleanor (Manning) Whitney of Lunenburg; a son, Gerard F. Whitney of Hobart, NY; two daughters, Jeanne E. Whitney of Salisbury, MD and Karen P. Doughty of Leominster; five grandchildren, Matthew, Katie, Abby, Evan and Lily and several nephews and nieces.

The funeral will be held on Monday, Sept. 14, from the Lunenburg Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Homes, 763 Massachusetts Ave., with a Mass at 10 AM in St. Boniface Church, 817 Massachusetts Ave. Burial will be in the North Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral will be held on Sunday, Sept. 13, from 3 to 6 PM. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Lunenburg Fire and Rescue Fund, 655 Massachusetts Ave., Lunenburg, MA 01462 or to the Cooperative Elders Healthcare at Rivercourt, 8 West Main St. Groton, MA 01472
